10 things about summer

I used to love the rainy and cold weather and still do to an extent. The cosy nights in with a cup of tea. However, since becoming a mum, I realise summer time is so much more fun, because you can do so much more with your children/child outdoors. As a general, here is my list of things I’m looking forward to in the summer. It’s the simplest things in life that I enjoy.

*Picnics in the park

*Ice cream

*Blowing bubbles in the garden with my daughter

*Ramadan is coming

*Celebration of eid-ul-fitr

*Family fairs/fetes

*Not putting too many layers on your children!

*Hopefully my child not getting too many colds or flus inshaAllah

*Milkshakes

*Sunshine

Mini Haul Spring/Summer Ready

So I took a trip to Matalan on a late Saturday afternoon and discovered, they had soo many nice things for the spring/summer months, in the home section.

They had a different variety of home ornaments such as scented candles decorated nicely, cushions, tea lights, kitchenware, teacups, coffee mugs, glasses and so on.

I found these really cool glass/plastic bottles to drink from, with straws. I really liked the quotes on them and the brights colours. At such cheap prices, I couldn’t resist.

Great to give as gifts, or you can drink anywhere, in the car or in your garden.

I also found a really bright picnic blanket which has a nice saying. Fleecy material on top and harder material underneath to lay on grass. It was only £6!

Really nice buys at bargain prices! Has got me looking forward to having fresh juice in the summer inshAllah!

hajj

Dhul Hijjah has already begun. Many pilgrims have made or are in the process of making their journey to the holiest cities in the World. Makkah & Madina. It brings back all the amazing and emotional memories of when I made my journey in 2011. Oh what a journey it was!

I will share with you my short snippets of some of the memories I have. There are too many to mention, but I’ll give you a few.

The hustle and bustle of Makkah & serenity of Madina:

*The surreal feeling of actually worshipping in masjid al haram. The spiritual call to prayer melts your heart like never before.

*Watching millions of people from different nations all in the same place for one purpose. To worship the almighty.

*Walking to the masjid in the dark to perform umrah

*Being close to your family, helping and protecting each other

*Tawaf was my favourite acts of worship

*Patiently waiting to drink water from the zam zam taps and having a cleaner walk through the crowds to pour me a glass.

*Masjid Nabawi is a breathtaking sight. Watching the skyline change from blue to pink to purple to navy to black as you spend time worshipping.

*Making sujood on the cold floor at fajr time.

*Night time shopping and shawarma and burger places.

*The emotional and physical hardships of the pilgrimage all worth it in the end inshAllah.

I could go on and I’ll never forget.

May Allah (swt) make the hajj easy on all pilgrims, accept their hajj and ours. ameen

Wow, this quote speaks volumes!

What does it mean to you?

To me, it means that if a plan of yours didn’t work out, there are so many other ways to achieve your goal.

So, don’t just stop at one thing, keep going & keep finding ways to make things happen.

Food for thought.

Simple Sponge

Below is a really simple recipe for a sponge cake I made for relatives, Went down a treat!

Sometimes the simplest recipes are the tastiest

*Mix together 8g of caster sugar with

*8g of margarine (I can’t believe its not butter)

*then gradually add three eggs to the mixture. Once smooth and all lumps are gone

*add 8g of Self Raising Flour. Mix, mix and mix until smooth and bake at gas mark 4 in the oven.

Tips:

Ensure you don’t overbake, so the cake remains spongy

Allow to cool, before removing from the tin

Homemade Shortbread

I made shortbread biscuits for my daughters playgroup Eid party. long overdue! she has been keeping me busy!

Nothing fancy, just simple, scrumptious biccies.

Recipe:

Mix together 4 oz of Caster Sugar, and 8oz of butter. Then add 10 oz of plain flour to form a dough.

Roll the dough out or pat it flat and then use cookie cutters to form whatever shape you like.

Line a baking tray with parchment.

Place your shortbreads on the lined baking tray and bake in the oven gas mark 5 for 15-20 mins.

They did come out bigger after being baked, so I would say make your shapes a little smaller.

Detoxing Childhood by Sue Palmer

what children want

My new found passion is to read different books and articles on parenting. It ranges from how to discipline children to keeping routines in place. This is mainly because I just want to learn more about children and how to connect to them. Being a mother myself, it really helps me to gain an understanding on how I can become a great parent inshaAllah.

Coming from a teaching background, I can also definitely say it helps understand the children you teach. As they say, teachers are like second parents.

Detoxing Childhood

I really enjoyed this book. It was so addictive, I couldn’t put it down. It’s a simple read and gives easy to follow guidelines on eating and sleeping habits, good family life and the effects of modern technology. Sue tackles issues such as the importance of eating together as a family, why T.V’s in bedrooms are a no-no etc.

I won’t tell you everything she talks about, as it’ll spoil the fun of reading 🙂 However, a very useful feature of the book is that the author has included links to other useful resources after each section. It allows you then to continue and do further research into the topic.

STAND OUTS

*The ‘be warm’ ‘be fair’ pages give you quick tips on how to keep a balance between keeping boundaries and giving your child room for freedom.

*The use of diagrams to show the importance of the above balance and what could happen if it all goes wrong.

Just a thought that came across my mind…

We all have our down days as nothing and no-one is perfect.

So, sometimes it really helps to think about people in worse off situations than ourselves. It helps us to appreciate all the good things we have in life.

The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said:

“Look at those people who have less than you and never look at those who have more grants than you, this will ensure you do not depreciate Allah’s favours” [Muslim]

Naturally, we tend to look at people who have more than us, be it money, cars, houses, children etc but what about those people who are less fortunate? with no food to eat?

Gives us less reasons to complain and look at the bright side of life!

5 little ways to improve your marriage

1. SMILE!  Something that seems small but makes a world of a difference. Your time with your loved one is what you make it. Smiling is the start of a happy evening.

2. GIFTS! Can be given on ‘Eid or anytime of the year. Just lets them know you’re thinking of them or that you specially went out of your way to get them something special.

3. EAT together. It can be difficult sometimes to find time in the day to eat with your spouse if both or one of you is very busy. Finding the time to sit down, eat one meal together, chat. Makes you feel connected, despite how busy you are.

4. Doing an ACTIVITY together, such as learning a language or cooking, anything really. Its really fun and you may get to see another side to your spouse, you never knew existed.

5. GAMES! Compete with each other in games. Could be a board game, online game, whatever tickles your fancy!

Tuna and Sweetcorn Burger

A nice alternative to a meat or chicken burger. It’s healthier too! minus the ketchup and mayonnaise that I couldn’t help adding.

Ingredients

two pieces of brown bread

one tin of tuna in brine

handful of sweetcorn

one chopped onion

2 eggs beaten

wholemeal bread rolls

Method

1. Break the bread into pieces and blend in a blender to form breadcrumbs. Put into a bowl.

2. Add the tuna, sweetcorn and chopped onion into the bowl. Season as you like.

3. slowly add the beaten egg to form a sticky mixture, enough to form round burgers.

4. Heat oil in a pan and cook each side of the burger until golden brown and cooked through the middle.

5. Put into bread rolls and add whatever sauce, or salsa and salad you like, with cheese!
